John 20:27

Thomas gets a bad rap.

People often come down hard on him for wanting proof of Jesus’ resurrection. We call him “Doubting Thomas” as if doubt was the only thing that defined him. But if I’m being honest, I have been Thomas.

I have doubted.
I have needed evidence.
I have wanted proof that the power of God was real.

There have been moments when I didn’t feel His presence. I didn’t feel His power. I didn’t see His hand moving. And in those moments, I wondered, What is the point of all of this?

Some may feel it is wrong to even think that, let alone say it out loud. But I believe many of us have felt that way before. We have had questions. We have had moments of weakness. We have wrestled with faith while still trying to hold on to God.

The difference is, many of us have been too afraid to admit it.

But when I pray, I talk to God with no boundaries.

If I am angry, He already knows.

If I am happy, He knows.

If I am indifferent, He knows that too.

God knows my heart and my mind, so I might as well come before Him with the truth.

Thomas wanted to see the wounds. He wanted proof that the One standing before him was really Jesus. And instead of rejecting Thomas, Jesus met him right where he was.

“Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here, and see my hands; and put out your hand, and place it in my side. Do not disbelieve, but believe.’”
John 20:27

Jesus did not shame Thomas for needing reassurance. He revealed Himself to him.

And Jesus has done the same for me.

Time and time again, He has shown me evidence that He is real. Evidence in answered prayers. Evidence in peace I should not have had. Evidence in doors opening and doors closing. Evidence in His correction, His comfort, His patience, and His presence.

Even when I could not feel Him, He was still there.
Even when I questioned, He was still faithful.
Even when I needed proof, He graciously reminded me who He is.

My friend, your doubt does not disqualify you from encountering Jesus. Your questions do not scare Him. Your honesty does not push Him away.

Bring Him the real you.

Bring Him the questions.

Bring Him the disappointment.

Bring Him the part of you that wants to believe but is still struggling.

Jesus is not only able to handle your honesty, He is able to strengthen your faith through it.

Thomas needed proof, and Jesus was proven.

He is risen.

He is Savior.

He is Lord.

And He is worthy to believe.
