“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” — John 14:15
Obedience > Comfort. Every. Single. Time.
We like being comfortable.
We like relationships that feel good.
We like being wanted.
We like having someone to call, someone to spend time with, and someone who makes us feel desired.
And sometimes obedience threatens all of that.
Because what happens when honoring God means saying no to something you really want?
What happens when the person you’re dating tells you they don’t understand why you’re WAITing?
What happens when maintaining your boundaries creates tension in the relationship?
What happens when obedience means possibly losing someone you hoped would stay?
That’s when we have a decision to make.
Comfort or obedience?
Comfort isn’t the enemy. Scripture calls God “the God of all comfort” (2 Corinthians 1:3). But comfort makes a terrible master. When it starts making our decisions, it will always ask for one more exception.
Jesus says in John 14:15:
“If you love me, you will keep my commandments.”
Jesus isn’t teaching us that we earn His love by being obedient. Our obedience is a response to His love and our love for Him.
And sometimes loving Jesus will require us to choose what honors Him over what feels comfortable to us.
That’s where WAITing becomes more than something you say you’re doing.
It becomes a decision you keep making.
You may have to choose obedience when the chemistry is strong. Oh, so strong!
You may have to choose obedience when you’re tired of being single.
You may have to choose obedience when somebody tells you, “If you loved me, you would.”
Notice how close that sounds to John 14:15? It’s the same shape with a very different master. Jesus says love Me and follow My ways. Pressure says love me and abandon His.
You may have to choose obedience when you start wondering whether your boundaries are keeping you from the relationship you want.
Those are the moments when you have to remember why you decided to WAIT in the first place.
This is bigger than maintaining a streak.
This is bigger than being able to say how many months or years you’ve been abstinent.
This is about honoring Christ with your life, including your body, your relationships, and your choices.
Comfort will tempt you to make exceptions.
Just this once.
We’ve been together for a while.
We’re probably going to get married anyway.
God knows my heart.
But loving Jesus can’t mean obeying Him only when obedience is convenient.
There will be times when obedience costs you comfort.
And yes, sometimes it may cost you a relationship.
That doesn’t mean every relationship that ends was God removing that person. And it doesn’t mean obedience guarantees someone new will come along right away.
It simply means you don’t have to compromise your commitment to Christ to keep someone.
Your obedience is not a bargaining chip to get God to give you a spouse.
You obey because He is Lord.
So when comfort and obedience pull you in opposite directions, remember who you belong to.
Choose Christ.
Choose His way.
Choose obedience.
Even when it’s uncomfortable.
Because WAITing isn’t about choosing what’s easiest.
It’s about honoring the One you love.
Obedience > comfort.
Every. Single. Time.
