Pray Y’all
On a scale from one to ten… how would you rate your prayer life?
If I’m being honest, mine fluctuates.
There are seasons where I’m locked in—intentional, focused, talking to God throughout the day, actually listening for His voice.
And then… there are other seasons.
Seasons where my prayer life is almost nonexistent.
Where I wait until I’m in bed…
don’t get on my knees…
start a quick little “Lord, thank you…” prayer…
and fall asleep before I even say amen.
Just a mess.
But here’s the truth:
Prayer was never meant to be seasonal. It was meant to be a lifestyle.
Jesus makes it plain in Luke 18:1—we should always pray and not give up.
Not just when things fall apart.
Not just when we need a breakthrough.
Always.
The early church understood this:
Acts 2:42
They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer.
Prayer wasn’t optional.
It was foundational.
Prayer is not just personal.
When we pray, we serve.
Philippians 2:3–4 reminds us to consider others above ourselves. One of the most selfless things you can do is intercede for someone else.
Sometimes the best way to show up for people…
is to go to God on their behalf.
Let’s clear something up:
Prayer is not a monologue—it’s communication.
It’s not just us talking to God…
it’s also God speaking to us.
The real question is:
Do we pause long enough to listen?
We rush through requests, say amen, and move on…
but miss the direction, correction, and clarity God wants to give.
In Matthew 6, Jesus doesn’t just tell us to pray—He shows us how.
First—what not to do:
Don’t pray to impress people.
Don’t perform for applause.
Pray in secret.
That’s where the real reward is.
1. Start with praise
“Our Father in heaven, your name be honored as holy…”
Before requests… recognize who He is.
2. Surrender to His will
“Your kingdom come. Your will be done…”
Not my plan.
Not my timeline.
Your will.
That’s hard… because our flesh fights it.
Romans 7:21–23 reminds us there’s always a battle within us.
That’s why we need His strength—not ours.
3. Depend on Him daily
“Give us this day our daily bread…”
Everything we need—big or small—comes from Him.
And notice this:
Jesus teaches us to praise first, then align with God, and then bring our needs.
Not because He doesn’t care…
but because order matters.
4. Confess and forgive
“Forgive us our debts…”
Be honest with God.
He already knows—He just wants your heart.
And don’t skip this part:
“…as we forgive our debtors.”
We want grace…
but struggle to give it.
Ask God to help you forgive—freely and fully.
5. Ask for strength against temptation
“Lead us not into temptation…”
God doesn’t tempt us—but He will strengthen us.
James 1:13–14 makes it clear: temptation comes from our own desires.
So we pray for help…
because we can’t win that battle alone.
Prayer changes you.
Yes, prayer changes things.
But more than that—
prayer changes you.
The more you pray:
You become more peaceful.
More grounded.
More confident.
More aware of God’s presence.
If Jesus prayed… how much more do we need to?
Jesus—perfect, sinless, all-powerful—
still made time to pray.
So what does that say about us?
We don’t just need prayer…
we depend on it.
Prayer protects.
Prayer heals.
Prayer restores.
Prayer strengthens.
Prayer delivers.
Don’t wait until life falls apart to pray—build a life that stands because you pray.
I can still hear the little church I grew up in singing:
“Have a little talk with Jesus…
Tell Him all about our troubles…”
And you know what that song was reminding us to do?
Pray, y’all.
