God Is Good
Psalm 34:8
“Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good! Blessed is the man who takes refuge in him!”
There’s a phrase that I’m not too keen on, but it fits today’s blog, so I’m going to roll with it.
Life be life-ing.
And sometimes, life be life-ing hard.
But even when life is life-ing, the Lord is still good.
The Lord is good even when life isn’t.
Psalm 34:8 tells us to “taste and see that the Lord is good.” In other words, experience Him for yourself. Trust Him. Walk with Him. Take refuge in Him. And you will discover that His goodness isn’t something we merely talk about—it’s something we can experience.
The verse continues by saying, “Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him.” To be blessed is more than having everything go the way we want. It speaks to a deeper sense of well-being and fulfillment that comes from placing our confidence in God.
And David knew something about needing refuge.
Psalm 34 was written during a difficult and dangerous season of David’s life. Yet David could still declare that the Lord was good.
Not because his circumstances were good.
But because God was.
That distinction matters.
If we measure God’s goodness by our circumstances, there will be days when we question Him.
There are too many painful situations, disappointing outcomes, unanswered prayers, losses, injustices, and circumstances in this world that don’t resemble goodness at all.
But God’s character does not change when our circumstances do.
So we have to intentionally remind ourselves of His goodness.
We have to remember what He has already done.
Remember how He has provided.
Remember how He has protected.
Remember how He has carried us.
Remember how many times He made a way when we couldn’t see one.
Focusing on the goodness of God has to become an active and willing decision, especially when life gives us every reason to focus on what isn’t good.
Because sometimes faith sounds like:
This situation is not good, but my God still is.
Life may be life-ing.
But God is still God-ing.
Okay, I may have taken that one too far.
But you get the point.
Taste and see.
Take refuge in Him.
And even when life isn’t good, never forget:
The Lord is.
