Family Motto

“But as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.” — Joshua 24:15

Joshua’s words were more than a personal statement. They were a bold declaration about the direction of his entire household.

Joshua understood that every family serves something. Some serve money, success, comfort, sports, entertainment, or public opinion. Although we may not bow before these things physically, they can still become the forces that control our schedules, influence our decisions, and receive our greatest devotion.

Joshua challenged God’s people to make a deliberate choice. Then he modeled that choice by declaring, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

That was his family motto.

This verse reminds us that faith should not be confined to attending church on Sunday. It should shape the atmosphere of our homes, the way we speak to one another, how we spend our time, what we prioritize, and the decisions we make.

Serving the Lord as a family means seeking His guidance together, praying together, studying His Word, and encouraging one another to walk in obedience. It means that when the culture shifts, our commitment does not.

When following God becomes inconvenient, we remain faithful. When the world encourages compromise, we remember what our household stands for.

Joshua’s declaration also reminds us that spiritual leadership begins with personal commitment. Before he declared what his household would do, Joshua said, “As for me.” He could not lead his family toward a commitment he was unwilling to make himself.

Strong families are built when individuals choose to follow Christ and support one another in that pursuit. Every member may not be in the same place spiritually, but one committed person can help establish a new direction for the home.

Your family may already have traditions, inside jokes, favorite meals, and sayings that have been passed down through generations. But what is the spiritual motto of your home?

Let your family be known for more than what you own, where you live, or what you accomplish. Let it be known that Jesus is welcomed, honored, and obeyed there.

As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

That is more than something we hang on the wall.

That is how we live.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of family. Help us to make You the center of our home. Give us the wisdom and strength to follow You faithfully and to encourage one another in our walk with Christ. May our home be a place where Your love, truth, and grace are evident. In Jesus’ name, amen.
