Mother’s Day Series Part 2: What You Say Matters

Your children aren’t just shaped by what you do…
they are deeply shaped by what you say.

“You’re just like your dad.”
“I’m fat.”
“That driver’s an idiot!”

Words like these may feel small in the moment…
but they don’t stay small.

They linger.
They echo.
They settle.

Sometimes in ways we don’t even realize.

There’s something powerful about words.

God spoke the world into existence.
Jesus is called the Word.

So it shouldn’t surprise us that what we say carries weight—especially in the lives of our children.

Because while they are watching how we live…
they are also listening to how we speak.

They hear how you talk to them.
They hear how you talk about yourself.
They hear how you talk about others.

And those words?
They don’t just pass through…
they settle in.

“Life and death are in the power of the tongue.”
Proverbs 18:21

That means our words can build…
or they can break.

We can speak identity…
or insecurity.

We can speak truth…
or confusion.

It’s easy to correct behavior.
“Don’t do that.”
“Stop acting like that.”

But are we also speaking life?

Are we reminding them:

  • Who they are in Christ

  • That they are loved

  • That they are called

  • That they are capable through Him

Because the world will be quick to label them…
but it’s our responsibility to ground them in truth.

And here’s the thing…

Sometimes it’s not what we say to our children—
it’s what we say around them.

How we speak about money.
How we speak about people.
How we speak about hard situations.

Are we speaking fear… or faith?

Moms, your words matter more than you think.

Even on the days you feel unheard…
even when it seems like it’s going in one ear and out the other…

It’s not.

Seeds are being planted.

“Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good for edifying…” — Ephesians 4:29

This isn’t about perfection.
It’s about intention.

Speak life over your children—
your words matter.

Share this with a mom who needs to be reminded that her words carry power.
