Jesus Stays Up So We Don’t Have To
Let me ask you something:
When you hear the word rest, what comes to mind?
Because listen — just the other day while preparing this blog, I tried to think about the last time I truly felt rested… in my body, my mind, or my soul.
And I almost joked, “Probably sometime before Roosevelt and Isaiah.”
But let me stop right there before I get myself in trouble.
But seriously — am I the only one who’s always tired?
It feels like no matter how much vacation you take — a week, two weeks — you come back tired all over again.
We live in a world that is constantly moving, constantly striving, constantly doing. Yet the God who made us designed us for rest.
Physical rest.
Emotional rest.
Spiritual rest.
Rest is not laziness.
Rest is an act of trust and an act of worship.
So today we’re going to dig into what God teaches us about rest — why it matters, how we practice it, and how it transforms our lives.
God’s Design for Rest
Let’s start at the very beginning — creation.
Our reference scripture is Genesis 2:2–3.
Genesis tells us:
“By the seventh day God had finished the work He had been doing; so on the seventh day He rested from all His work.”
Now, God wasn’t tired.
He doesn’t grow weary.
So why did He rest?
I believe He was modeling something for us.
He was showing us that rest is:
• Part of creation’s rhythm
• Holy
• Intentional
• Connected to worship
Rest is a posture of the heart that says,
“God, I trust You enough to stop.”
Because stopping requires faith.
Stopping means I’m not the one holding everything together — Jesus is.
The Sabbath isn’t just a rule — it’s a reminder:
“You are not God, and you don’t have to live like you are.”
Resting in God’s Provision
In Exodus 16:22–30, the Israelites panicked about food.
So God provided manna — enough for each day.
But on the day before the Sabbath, He provided double, so they could rest.
Rest required trust.
They had to believe:
• “God will supply even when I stop.”
• “God will take care of what I release.”
• “God is my Provider, not my hustle.”
And it’s the same for us.
Sometimes rest exposes how much we rely on ourselves instead of God.
Rest is saying,
“I don’t have to keep grinding to keep my world together. God’s got me.”
The Rest Jesus Offers
Jesus says in Matthew 11:28–30:
“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”
This is not just physical rest — this is soul rest.
Jesus uses the imagery of a yoke, the wooden harness placed on oxen.
The message is simple:
“You’re carrying something you weren’t meant to carry.
Give Me your heavy yoke… and take Mine.”
And His yoke is easy.
Let’s be honest — as humans we carry so much:
• Family responsibilities
• Work pressures
• Expectations
• Emotional labor
• Anxiety
• Guilt and shame
• Trying to look like we have it all together
And Jesus is saying,
“Give it to Me. You don’t have to carry all that.”
What would it look like for you to actually trade your burdens for His yoke?
Rest and Peace
Paul writes in Philippians 4:6–7:
“Do not be anxious about anything… but pray about everything.”
Then he says the peace of God will guard your heart and your mind.
Rest does not mean the absence of problems.
Rest means the presence of God’s peace in the middle of those problems.
Anxiety drains us and robs us of rest.
But prayer shifts us back into trust.
Let me ask you:
How has worry robbed you of rest lately?
Let me remind you of something:
Our God never sleeps or slumbers.
So give your anxiety to Jesus… and go to sleep.
Living It Out
So how do we actually live this out?
Physical Rest
Learning to honor healthy rhythms of work and Sabbath.
Pause. Breathe. Sleep.
Emotional Rest
Give your burdens to God through prayer instead of holding everything inside.
Spiritual Rest
Resting in who God is.
Psalm 62:1 says:
“Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from Him.”
Rest is not something you achieve.
It’s something you receive.
Family, you were not created to run on empty.
God designed you for rest — not just for your body, but for your mind and your soul.
So this week, I pray you choose rest — real rest — the kind that only God gives.
If this encouraged you, share it with someone who needs a reminder to slow down and breathe.
And as always,
Be the Salt.
Be the Light.
so they can rest too.
