Shut Up!
The title might have made you a bit uneasy, but stay with me. I promise there’s a word in here.
Okay—hear me with your spirit:
Shut up.
Yep, I said it.
And I know “shut up” isn’t polite. Your parents probably told you it was rude. But sometimes saying things plainly is the only way for the point to really land.
Now don’t get me wrong—there are moments when we absolutely should speak.
Times when God calls us to use our voice boldly, courageously, and confidently.
But then there are those other moments…
Those “I should have just stayed quiet” moments.
Those “Why did I say that?” moments.
Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is simply…
be quiet.
Because silence is not weakness.
Sometimes it’s wisdom.
Let’s look at what Scripture says.
Proverbs 17:27–28
“Whoever restrains his words has knowledge,
and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.
Even a fool who keeps silent is considered wise;
when he closes his lips, he is deemed intelligent.”
Listen…the Bible said it, not me.
Even a fool can look wise when they learn to hush.
Some of us might need that stitched on a T-shirt.
Ecclesiastes 3:7
“A time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak.”
In other words, there is a time to talk.
And there is a time to zip it.
Both are spiritual disciplines.
Learning when to speak and when to stay silent is a sign of wisdom—not fear, not weakness, not passivity… wisdom.
Because when we close our mouths, we’re more likely to open our ears.
Open our ears to Jesus.
Open our ears to others.
Open our ears to what’s actually happening instead of what we assume is happening.
Sometimes the Holy Spirit is trying to help us avoid unnecessary arguments, unnecessary explanations, unnecessary drama, and unnecessary apologies.
Let’s be honest—some of our most embarrassing moments in life could have been avoided if we had just stayed quiet for five more seconds.
Just five.
But in this season, we’re growing.
We’re maturing.
We’re learning that silence can sometimes be the better teacher.
Wisdom isn’t always found in the words we speak, but rather in the words we choose not to say.
A Simple Prayer
Jesus, sometimes I talk too much.
Teach me when to speak and when to listen.
Stop me when I’m about to say something reckless or interrupt someone.
Help me restrain my words when needed and open my ears to truly hear—You and others.
Make my mouth wise, my spirit calm, and my heart obedient.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
