No Mixed Messages

"When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come."
— John 16:13

Did you ever play telephone as a child?

Players sit in a line and pass a secret from one person to the next through whispers. The first person may say, "We're eating pizza at noon," but by the time the message reaches the last person, it somehow becomes, "Don't forget to log into Zoom."

The message changes because people are imperfect.

We mishear.
We misunderstand.
We forget details.

Sometimes we even add our own interpretation.

But the Holy Spirit does not operate like a game of telephone.

Jesus called Him the Spirit of truth. He does not distort God's message, misunderstand God's will, or speak from His own agenda. He faithfully communicates what He receives from the Father.

There are no mixed messages with the Holy Spirit.

When He convicts, He speaks truth.

When He guides, He guides into truth.

When He comforts, He does so according to truth.

When He reveals God's direction, He reveals truth.

The Holy Spirit is not offering personal opinions or human wisdom. He delivers God's message exactly as God intends it to be heard.

That should encourage every believer.

We do not have to wonder whether God is capable of communicating clearly with His children. The problem isn’t His ability to speak; it is often our willingness to listen.

The closer we draw to God through prayer, Scripture, worship, and obedience, the more sensitive we become to the voice of His Spirit.
