Closer to Forever
Today is my birthday.
And birthdays have a way of making us pause.
We think about where we’ve been…
what we’ve accomplished…
what we still hope to do.
Another year older.
Another year wiser.
At least, that’s what we say.
But this year, I found myself thinking a little differently.
Not just about the years behind me…
but about what’s ahead of me.
And not just in this life.
In eternity.
Because if I’m keeping it 100…
there’s something sobering about celebrating the day I was born
while knowing I’m also one step closer to the day I’ll stand before God.
And instead of that feeling heavy…
It feels clarifying.
There’s a part of Scripture we don’t talk about often.
Not because it’s not important…
But because it’s intense.
Daniel 12 doesn’t ease you in—it wakes you up.
It speaks of a time so difficult that nothing before it compares. A level of trouble that would shake anyone. And if we’re honest…
That kind of language can feel unsettling.
Because we like comfort.
We like clarity.
We like control.
But this passage reminds us of something we don’t always want to face:
God doesn’t promise a life without trouble…
He promises deliverance in the middle of it.
Daniel 12:1 introduces us to a powerful truth:
Even in the chaos, heaven is not scrambling.
Michael—the great prince—is already assigned.
Protection is already in place.
Deliverance is already written.
Let that sit for a moment.
Before the trouble even begins…
God has already made provision for His people.
And that changes how we should see hard seasons.
Because what feels like things are falling apart…
may actually be things falling into place under God’s authority.
Then Daniel shifts our perspective completely.
He starts talking about the resurrection.
People rising from the dust.
Eternity unfolding.
Two very different outcomes.
And just like that, we’re reminded:
This life is not the final destination.
We spend so much time focused on the temporary—
our plans, our timelines, our comfort…
But Daniel pulls back the curtain and says:
There’s more.
So much more.
And how we live now?
It carries into forever.
Verse 3 is where it gets personal.
It says those who are wise—those who follow God and lead others toward Him—
will shine like the brightness of the sky.
Not for a moment.
Not for a season.
Forever.
And that hits different.
Because it means your faith isn’t just about surviving life…
It’s about living in a way that leaves a trail to righteousness for others.
It means your obedience matters.
Your witness matters.
Your stand matters.
Even when it’s quiet.
Even when it’s unnoticed.
Even when it’s hard.
And maybe that’s what this birthday is really about for me.
Not just celebrating another year of life…
But asking myself:
Am I living in a way that’s preparing me for what comes after it?
Because birthdays aren’t just a reminder that we’re getting older…
They’re a reminder that eternity is getting closer.
So what do we do with this?
We don’t ignore it.
We don’t water it down.
We let it realign us.
When life feels uncertain → God is still in control
When the world feels heavy → this isn’t the end
When you’re tempted to stay silent → someone’s eternity may be impacted by your obedience
There is a time coming that will shake the world.
But for those who belong to God…
it won’t be a time of defeat.
It will be a time of distinction.
So don’t just live for what feels good now.
Don’t just focus on what you can see.
Live with eternity in mind.
Stand firm in your faith.
And shine in a way that points others to Him.
Because in the end…
the ones who stand with God don’t fade in the darkness—
they shine through it… into eternity.

this life isn’t the end—eternity is on the line.
